After this Dimuth Karunaratne got the support of Kusal Mendis. Both the batsmen took the news of the Irish bowlers fiercely and shared a record 281 runs for the second wicket. The 281-run partnership between Karunaratne-Mendis was the best for any wicket at the Galle ground.
This is the third largest partnership for the second wicket from Sri Lanka. George Dockrell broke the partnership by getting Kusal Mendis lbw. Mendis scored 140 runs in 193 balls with the help of 18 fours and a six.
