SL vs IRE: Record-breaking partnership of Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis, Sri Lanka made huge score on the first day

Captain Dimuth Karunaratne (179) and Kusal Mendis (140) scored centuries as Sri Lanka made a huge score on the first day of the first Test against Ireland on Sunday. At stumps, Sri Lanka scored 386 runs losing 4 wickets in 88 overs.

 

In Galle, Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne won the toss and elected to bat first. Nishan Madushka (29) and Karunaratne put on 64 runs in 89 balls for the first wicket. Curtis Campher gave the first blow to Sri Lanka by getting Madushka out caught by wicketkeeper Tucker.

After this Dimuth Karunaratne got the support of Kusal Mendis. Both the batsmen took the news of the Irish bowlers fiercely and shared a record 281 runs for the second wicket. The 281-run partnership between Karunaratne-Mendis was the best for any wicket at the Galle ground.

 

This is the third largest partnership for the second wicket from Sri Lanka. George Dockrell broke the partnership by getting Kusal Mendis lbw. Mendis scored 140 runs in 193 balls with the help of 18 fours and a six.

 

Karunaratne misses double century

Angelo Mathews comes to the crease after the dismissal of Mendis. Ben White did not even allow Mathews to open the account and got Ireland's third success by getting caught out by wicketkeeper Tucker. Great success for Ireland at the end of the day. Dimuth Karunaratne was caught by Mark Adder at the hands of wicketkeeper Tucker. Karunaratne misses out on a double century. The left-handed batsman scored 179 runs in 235 balls with the help of 15 fours.

 

Dinesh Chandimal (18*) and Prabhat Jayasuriya (12*) remained at the crease. There is a 13-run partnership between the two for the fifth wicket. Mark Eder, Curtis Campher, Ben White and George Dockrell got one success each from Ireland. Sri Lanka will look to post a big total on the second day while Ireland's bowlers will look to bowl out the hosts early.
