Stalin Resignation: Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin Resigns Following Defeat; Path Now Clear for Formation of New Government

Posted on 5th May 2026 03:13 pm by rohit kumar

Following the defeat in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, DMK President M.K. Stalin tendered his resignation from the post of Chief Minister on Tuesday. Party sources confirmed that his resignation letter has been forwarded to the office of the State Governor, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. Notably, in the Assembly elections held on April 23, the TVK—a party led by actor Vijay—inflicted a crushing defeat upon the ruling DMK. It was in the wake of this defeat that Stalin took the significant step of relinquishing power, thereby paving the way for the formation of a new government in the state.

Following the crushing defeat in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, M.K. Stalin expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the people of the state. Despite losing power, Stalin accepted the election results with grace and extended his thanks to all the voters who supported the DMK alliance. He clarified that even though his party lost the election, every single vote cast by the public remains, for him, a priceless symbol of trust.

What Stalin Said on Social Media

In a post shared on the social media platform ‘X’, Stalin presented some key statistics to the public. He revealed that in this election, the DMK alliance secured a total of 15,482,782 votes. Stalin noted that the margin of votes between the winning party and the DMK was not substantial. The winning party received only 1.743 million (17.43 lakh) more votes than the DMK—a difference that amounts to a mere 3.52 percent of the total votes cast.

DMK to Assume the Role of the Opposition

Responding to the situation, Stalin boosted the morale of his party workers by reminding them that the DMK has held power on six previous occasions. He asserted that there is no victory or defeat that the party has not already faced. Stalin declared that while they would have formulated welfare schemes for the public had they been in power, now that they are in the opposition, they will fight with full vigor to champion the demands of the people. He gave an assurance that the DMK, as a strong opposition party, would continue to champion the rights of the people with complete sincerity.

Has the TVK Pulled Off a Major Upset?

The results of this assembly election have stunned the entire state. In its very first electoral outing, the TVK delivered a spectacular performance, securing 107 seats in the 234-member assembly. However, the party fell short of the majority mark by 11 seats. Meanwhile, the DMK was reduced to a mere 59 seats. Now, in order to form the government, the TVK is expected to seek support from smaller parties such as the Congress, the Left parties, the CPI(M), and the VCK.

Where Does Stalin Stand in the Assembly Elections?

The most significant and startling outcome of this election was witnessed in the constituency of DMK Chief M.K. Stalin himself. In the Kolathur assembly constituency, Stalin was defeated by the TVK candidate, V.S. Babu, by a margin of 8,795 votes. In terms of vote share as well, the TVK emerged at the forefront, securing over 32 percent of the votes. In contrast, the DMK garnered 24.19 percent and the AIADMK received 21.22 percent of the votes—figures that underscore a major decline for both of these major political parties.
