The Central Government has assured the Supreme Court after a contempt warning to the Army for granting permanent commission to women military officers. The Center said that all eligible women military officers will be given a permanent commission.
The Center has promised the apex court that an early decision will be taken on granting permanent commission to 11 women military officers who have taken refuge in the Supreme Court for permanent commission.
In October, the Indian Army granted a permanent commission to 39 women officers. Army officials said that the Supreme Court had directed the Army to grant permanent commission to these officers by November 1. On October 22, the Supreme Court had directed 39 women officers to be granted permanent commission within seven working days.
The order was passed by the top court after the central government informed that 39 out of 71 army officers have been found eligible for permanent commission under the court order. A two-member bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud had asked all these 39 women army officers to be granted a permanent commission by November 1.
On October 22, the Center had told the Supreme Court that one of the 72 women applicants for the permanent commission had decided to retire on their own. Of the remaining 71 women officers, seven were declared medically unfit while 25 officers were not considered eligible for permanent commission due to reasons including discipline.
