The level of pollution has been continuously increasing since Diwali in the country's capital Delhi. People are having trouble breathing. A day before Diwali, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi had dropped to below 300, which once again increased to beyond 400 on Tuesday.
According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), air quality across Delhi remains in the 'severe' category. AQI was 430 in Anand Vihar, 417 in RK Puram, 423 in Punjabi Bagh, and 428 in Jahangirpuri.
Experts say that due to the cold wind blowing from the north-western direction, polluted particles are not able to spread in the atmosphere, due to which the level of pollution is continuously increasing. The night temperature will decrease due to cold winds, due to which the level is expected to increase in the coming days.
According to the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, the major surface winds remained calm in Delhi on Tuesday morning due to which pollution particles could not spread. At the same time, the cold moderate wind blowing from a north-west direction made the situation worse. It was partly cloudy in the morning. The situation is not expected to improve even on Wednesday.
The predominant surface wind over Delhi is likely to come from north-west/north-east directions. The wind speed can be four km per hour. The sky will be clear in the morning and light fog may occur which will increase the pollution level. Whereas on Thursday the sky will be clear in the morning. The main surface wind in Delhi may blow from easterly directions at a speed of eight km per hour with light fog.
