The all-India average retail price of tomatoes has come down by 29 percent as compared to the previous month. According to the government, the average price of tomatoes has come down due to the improvement in their arrival in the market. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution said on Tuesday that the arrival of tomatoes in the mandis has increased due to the monsoon rains. This has given relief to prices. The ministry has also said in its statement that the retail prices of onions in the market have also come down by nine percent as compared to last year. It is to be known that onion and tomato are two important vegetables used in the Indian kitchen.

Tomato prices rose from Rs 52 per kg to Rs 37 per kg in a month

According to the data released by the ministry, the all-India average retail price of tomatoes was trading at Rs 37.35 per kg on Tuesday (July 19), as against Rs 52.5 per kg a month ago. At the same time, according to government data, the all-India average retail price of onion was Rs 25.78 per kg on Tuesday.

Government prepares buffer stock by storing onions

The central government has said that in the current year it has prepared a stock of 2.50 lakh tonnes of onion, which is the highest ever buffer stock of onion purchased. The government believes that despite its record production of 317.03 lakh tonnes of onion due to this move, prices have not broken in the mandis this year. It has also been said by the ministry that this year this buffer stock of onions will be used to stabilize the prices of onions in the market from August to December. Let us tell you that every year between August to December, there is a jump in the prices of onions in the mandis of the country due to different reasons.

The government is taking this step to control onion prices in the country

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution has said that the buffer stock of onions will be released through the open market sale. It will be given to states, union territories, and government agencies for supply in retail outlets. The government has said that the buffer stock of onions will be used in those target markets of the country where prices have been rising compared to last month. The availability of onions will be ensured in the major mandis of those areas by using the buffer stock of onions.
