One Nation One Election: 'One country-one election campaign is a means to postpone elections in five states, big claim of lawyer Prashant Bhushan

Well-known Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan has given a big statement regarding one country, one election. He has alleged that the Central Government is campaigning on this issue because it wants to postpone the elections in five states. Let us tell you that at the end of this year, elections are to be held in five states in the country – Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Mizoram.

Prashant Bhushan said, "One country - one election cannot be implemented in a parliamentary democracy, because in a country like India, a government can fall even in the mid-term after losing the majority and after this, a new government is formed." However, if one country's election is implemented then in such situations it will be forced to impose President's rule which is against democracy.

Prashant Bhushan said, "This would mean that we are taking India from a democratic system to a system of President's rule. So in this sense, it would be a complete violation of parliamentary democracy. In my view, the government is completely aware of this." And they also know that for the system of President's rule, some amendments will have to be made in the Constitution."

'Government fears defeat in five states'

He said that the present government does not have a majority in the Rajya Sabha. He is also aware of all these facts. Despite this, the government moved towards a One Nation One Election, the sole purpose of which is to postpone the elections in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Mizoram scheduled for later this year.

Bhushan claimed, “Bharatiya Janata Party is afraid of defeat in the assembly elections of these five states. Therefore, in the name of ‘one nation, one election’, they want to postpone the assembly elections till the Lok Sabha elections of 2024, so that President’s rule can be imposed in these states.”
