US President Joe Bain and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reaffirmed their continued commitment to supporting Ukraine against Russia's aggression during a phone call on Sunday. The White House has given this information in a press release.
According to the release, they reaffirmed their shared commitment to upholding the rules-based international order, human rights, and fair trade practices. The leaders underscored the continued commitment of both the US and Germany in providing economic, humanitarian, and security assistance to Ukraine to defend itself against Russian aggression.
The two leaders agreed to describe Russia's recent nuclear threats as "irresponsible". The two leaders also discussed Scholz's recent visit to the People's Republic of China, the release said. Earlier on Friday, the German chancellor became the first Group of Seven (G7) leader to visit China in nearly three years.
The visit comes in the backdrop of semiconductor shortages around the world after the US banned the sale of advanced computer chips to China, prompting efforts to curb China's technology and military ambitions.
Scholz visited China with a team of top officials, which means trade with the world's second-largest economy must continue. The G7 leader's first visit to China in nearly three years comes at a time when Germany is heading for a recession.
According to official figures, last year China was Germany's largest trading partner for the sixth year in a row, with a trade value of more than 15% from 2020. China's imports and exports from Germany amounted to 245 billion euros (US$242 billion) in 2021.
Meanwhile, the US is gearing up for mid-term elections, which are due in less than a week. US midterm elections are general elections that take place near the midpoint of a president's four-year term. Federal offices held for elections during the midterm include all 435 seats in the US House of Representatives and 33 or 34 out of 100 in the US Senate. Seats are included.
