Weather Updates: Red alert issued for 10 dams in Kerala, heavy rain may occur in more than 20 states

A red alert has been issued for 10 dams as the water level of rivers and ponds rises due to heavy rains in Kerala. Given the danger, two shutters of Kaki Dam have been opened. The state government has decided to keep the Lord Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala closed for the time being due to the devastation caused by rains and landslides.

 

 

State Revenue Minister K Rajan told media persons after a review meeting and assessment of the situation at Pathanamthitta Collectorate on Monday that the government has decided to release about 200 cumecs of water by opening the Kaki Dam due to the rise in the water level of the Pampa river by about 15 cm. has done. He said that the decision has been taken keeping in view the water level of the dam crossing the danger mark and the forecast of heavy rains by the Meteorological Department on October 20. He said that if the water of the dam is not released now, the situation may worsen. He said that because of the situation, permission cannot be given for worship at Sabarimala. It is noteworthy that it was opened on October 16 for Tula Puja in Lord Ayyappa temple.

 

Orange alert issued for eight dam

The minister said that preparations have been made to evacuate the people living on the banks of the Pampa river. At present, 83 camps have been set up in the district, in which more than 2,000 people are staying. He said that people need not panic. Of the 10 dams for which a red alert has been issued, most are located in Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Thrissur districts, including Kaki, Sholayar, Matupatti, Moozhiar, Kundala, and Peechi. Apart from this, an orange alert has been issued for eight other dams.

Heavy rain expected in the next few days in 20 states

The heavy rain that has been going on for the last two days will continue for the next few more days and will cover all the North-East states, North India, and most of South India. According to Naresh Kumar, Senior Scientist of the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of heavy rains in at least 20 states of the country for the next few days. Delhi has recorded the highest rainfall of 94.6 mm since 1960 October.

 

According to Kumar, two low-pressure areas are present over the country in Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal, while due to western disturbance in Afghanistan, Delhi and adjoining states are receiving rain. Due to this Western Disturbance, heavy rains will occur over Uttarakhand and West Uttar Pradesh, while the effect of a low-pressure area over Bengal will affect the states of North East. The Meteorological Department has predicted 12 to 20 cm of rain in all these states. Apart from these three weather conditions, the rains in South India have slowed down, but from October 20, the easterly winds will again strengthen there, due to which heavy rains are possible over Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.

 

Dalai Lama offers help

The Dalai Lama expressed grief over the woes of Kerala and offered financial assistance to assist in the relief and rescue work. In a letter to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, the Tibetan religious leader said, "I extend my condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones and were affected in this disaster." He wrote, 'I know that the state government and the concerned bodies are making efforts at their level to help the needy. I would like to help on behalf of the Dalai Lama Trust to express my sympathy.

 

Three people died due to rain in Uttarakhand, Chardham Yatra halted

In Uttarakhand for the second day in continuous rain, three Nepalese laborers died, while two were injured. The authorities have put a temporary ban on the Chardham Yatra due to the rain. He also said that the pilgrimage will not be started until the weather is normal. Because of the warning in Uttarakhand, most educational institutions remained closed on Monday. The Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rain, hail, lightning, and thunderstorms with a speed of about 70 kmph in 13 districts of the state till Tuesday.

 

DM Vijay Kumar Jogdande said that the slain laborers lived in a tent at Samkhal near Lansdowne in Pauri district. They were buried alive as debris fell from above due to rain. All these laborers were associated with the construction work of a hotel in that area. Meanwhile, pilgrims from Chardham reached Haridwar and Rishikesh on Sunday, but they have been instructed not to go further till the weather becomes normal. Along with this, the movement of vehicles has also been banned there.

 

CM Dhami reviewed

Vehicles will not be allowed beyond Chandrabhaga bridge, Tapovan, Lakshman Jhula, and Muni ki Reti. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the State Disaster Control Room and took stock of the roads and highways along with the weather information. He also requested the pilgrims to postpone their journey for two to three days. Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Dhami over the phone and inquired about the steps taken by the state government. Shah has assured all possible help to the state.
