A hearing is going on in the court regarding whether the fountain present in Gyanvapi Mosque in Varanasi is Shivling or not. Today the order of the District Court has come regarding the carbon dating of the fountain. The court has said in its order that it wants some clarification in this matter and has given the next date of October 11. Meanwhile, one word that has become very much discussed is carbon dating. Let us tell you what is carbon dating.
what is carbon dating?
According to a research paper published in the scientific journal Nature, all living objects absorb carbon from their surroundings. It also contains trace amounts of natural and radioactive carbon called C-14. Not all, but some isotopes have an unstable nucleus. That is, this unstable isotope will change the number of protons, neutrons, or both. This change over time is called radioactive decay. At present, the living organism will form C-14 present in the atmosphere. Whereas too many old dead sources would have all but wiped out.
Karbonn-14 Builds Time Capsule
In this way, the age of an organic object can be determined based on C-14. Under this, the age 5730-year-old sample can also be found. The paper, published in the journal Nature, states that when a plant or animal dies, it stops absorbing carbon. But since carbon-14 or C-14 is a radioactive carbon, its accumulated amount keeps on depleting. The continuously decaying carbon-14 forms a time capsule. The amount of radioactive left on the object is checked through carbon dating. After this, it is decided how long such a thing is old.
Can stone be carbon dating?
However, geologists do not use carbon dating techniques to determine the age of rocks. For this the presence of organic material is necessary. Dr. Christopher S. Bessard, a professor of physics at West Texas A&M University, suggests that carbon dating can only be done for objects that are less than 50,000 years old. Therefore, this technique is used only to find the age of trees, plants, and animals, as they are usually less than 50 thousand years.
Then how is the age of the rock known?
Now since it is necessary to have the element C-14 for carbon dating. But if this element is not found in the rock, then its age can be ascertained based on the radioactive isotopes present in it. Explain that the age of rocks can be ascertained through radiometric dating.
