WhatsApp's upcoming username feature has triggered a fresh debate over online safety, identity theft, and cyber fraud in India. While Meta says the feature is designed to improve user privacy by allowing people to chat without sharing their mobile numbers, concerns have emerged over whether fraudsters could misuse the names of politicians, celebrities, and public figures.
Responding to the controversy, Meta has clarified that high-profile usernames will be protected and cannot be claimed by unauthorized users.
Meta Clarifies Rules for Celebrity and Politician Usernames
In its official FAQ, Meta rejected social media claims suggesting that anyone could reserve usernames belonging to celebrities, politicians, or government institutions.
According to the company:
Reserved usernames will only be available to the legitimate account owner.
Verified celebrities, government agencies, and Meta Verified users will have priority access to their usernames.
Similar username variations will also be reserved to reduce impersonation and misuse.
Meta says these safeguards are intended to prevent identity fraud before the feature is rolled out globally.
Why Has the Government Raised Concerns?
The Central Government has reportedly sought an explanation from Meta over the proposed username feature.
Officials fear that if adequate security measures are not implemented, cybercriminals could misuse usernames to conduct:
Phishing attacks
Identity theft
Digital arrest scams
Financial fraud
Online impersonation scams
The government has also reportedly asked Meta to explain how it would handle accountability if cybercrime cases increase after the feature is introduced.
According to reports, discussions between the government and Meta are still ongoing.
What Triggered the Controversy?
The debate intensified after several prominent personalities claimed on social media platform X that usernames similar to their names had already been reserved.
Among those raising concerns were:
Manish Sisodia
Bipin Preet Singh
Their posts sparked widespread discussion about whether impersonation could become easier once usernames become available.
Security Features Planned by WhatsApp
Meta says the new username system will include multiple layers of security to protect users.
According to the company:
Users must know the exact username to initiate contact.
WhatsApp will block repeated attempts to guess usernames.
Automated systems will detect suspicious activity and potential abuse.
When receiving a message from an unknown username, users will see important context such as:
Whether the account is newly created.
Whether the sender is already in their contacts.
Any mutual groups shared.
The sender's country.
These details will help users determine whether a message appears trustworthy before replying.
Has WhatsApp Launched the Username Feature?
No.
Meta has confirmed that the username feature has not yet been released.
The company plans to introduce it gradually later this year. Even after usernames become available, users will still need a mobile number to register and operate a WhatsApp account.
IFF Questions Government's Notice
The Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF) has also reacted to the government's concerns.
The organization argues that any attempt to block or delay a digital feature should have a clear legal basis. According to the IFF, existing laws do not explicitly empower authorities to require prior approval before the launch of new platform features.
What It Means for Users
The upcoming username feature represents one of WhatsApp's biggest privacy-focused updates in recent years. While it promises to reduce the need for sharing personal phone numbers, its success will largely depend on Meta's ability to prevent impersonation, fake accounts, and cyber fraud.
As discussions between Meta and Indian authorities continue, the rollout of WhatsApp usernames is expected to remain under close regulatory scrutiny.
