Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), has been elected for a second term of five years. No one had challenged Dr. Tedros for this position. After this, the Director-General of WHO tweeted and said, I am grateful to the member countries, who reposed faith in me. I thank all the healthcare workers and colleagues with whom I look forward to continuing the journey.

 

Proposals are sought from member countries

 

According to the constitution of the World Health Organization, all member countries propose names for the post of Director-General. A time limit is fixed for this. This time the election process started in April 2021. The deadline for submission of proposals expired on April 23, 2021. After this, information about the proposals received from the member countries was published on October 29, 2021.

The World Health Organization conducts a secret ballot for the post of Director-General, in which all member states vote. The WHO Executive Board at its 150th session in January 2022 nominated Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus for the post of Director-General of WHO, he was not challenged by anyone. Therefore, on Tuesday, he was elected Director-General.

According to the constitution, any person can be appointed as the Director-General of the World Health Organization twice. The tenure is for five years. Earlier Dr. Tadros was named Director-General of WHO on 23 May 2017. His name was proposed by the Ethiopian government. He started his five-year term on 1 July 2017. Tedros replaced Dr. Margaret Chan, who was Director-General of WHO since 1 January 2007.

 

What is the responsibility of the WHO Chief

 

The World Health Organization is responsible for providing leadership in matters of health concern. He restores health services in cases where joint action is needed. It is also the responsibility of the WHO Chief to establish appropriate standards and standards of health and to promote their implementation.
