India has reaffirmed its commitment to economic ties with Russia ahead of next week's two-plus-two talks with the US. Russia is facing international sanctions. At the same time, the government is focusing on stabilizing the established relations between the two countries in the current circumstances.
The government has denied any international pressure on India to cut trade ties with Russia. She said the two countries were working to finalize a payment mechanism that would allow them to do business. The US does not want any acceleration in the import of Indian oil from Russia, but the Indian government has made it clear that India's legitimate energy transactions should not be politicized.
There is talk of sanctions but it is not on the whole business. Foreign Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi said, "There is a lot of trade going on together, oil trade too. Our focus is on maintaining and stabilizing our established economic ties with Russia." He said India has been very open about its relations with Russia. The spokesman was responding to questions related to statements from US warning countries.
The government said External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will lead the Indian delegation to the 4th India-US 2+2 Dialogue on April 11. The position of Ukraine is likely to dominate the agenda of the talks. Jaishankar will meet his US counterpart Secretary Blinken separately.
