Why Siachen is important for India
Siachen Glacier is a very remote area located in Ladakh at an altitude of about 20 thousand feet. It is situated in the Karakoram mountain range.
Siachen is the world's highest battlefield, where India-Pakistan forces are face to-face for the last 38 years.
Since 1984, the entire 76 km long Siachen Glacier and all its major passes are under Indian control.
The geographical location of Siachen makes it very important for India. On one side of it is the area under Pakistani control and on the other side is China.
From here India can keep an eye on the activities of Pakistan as well as China. At the same time, India prevents the military alliance between Pakistan and China, which is very important for the security of Ladakh.
Siachen is just north of the point NJ9842, where the Line of Control (LoC) between India and Pakistan ends.
Siachen is covered with snow throughout the year. The average temperature here is minus 10-degree centigrade. The temperature here in winter becomes -50 to -70 degree centigrade.
