Meanwhile, similar news has come out from America today, where Indian-origin Manpreet Monika Singh has become the first Sikh woman judge in America. Monica is sworn in as a Harris County Judge. Monica Singh was born and raised in Houston and now lives in Bellaire with her husband and two children.

 

Monica's father went to the US in the 1970s

Monica Singh was sworn in on Friday as Judge of the Harris County Civil Court at Law No. 4 in Texas. Singh's father had migrated to the US in the early 1970s. As a trial attorney for over 20 years, Monica has been involved in numerous civil rights organizations at the local, state, and national levels.

Monika of Indian origin expressed great happiness at her position in the oath ceremony. It means a lot to me because I represent H-Town (Houston), so I am happy for today. On the other hand, Indian-American Judge Ravi Sandil, the state's first South Asian judge, presided over the ceremony. "This is a really big moment for the Sikh community," Sandil said. She said that Monika is now like an ambassador not only for Sikhs but for all women.

 

5 lakh Sikhs in America

There are an estimated 500,000 Sikhs in the US, of whom 20,000 live in the Houston area. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said it is a proud day for the Sikh community, but it is also a proud day for everyone because it reflects the diversity of the city of Houston.
