The Asian Games 2026 men's cricket tournament has its semifinal lineup confirmed after all four quarter-final matches were abandoned without a single ball being bowled due to rain in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
India will face Sri Lanka, while Pakistan will take on Bangladesh in the semifinals after all four teams advanced based on their superior ICC T20 rankings and tournament seedings.
Why were all four quarter-finals abandoned?
Persistent rain disrupted the knockout stage, forcing officials to call off every quarter-final without play.
The affected matches were:
India vs Afghanistan
Pakistan vs Hong Kong
Sri Lanka vs Nepal
Bangladesh vs Malaysia
Since the tournament regulations use ICC T20 rankings to determine progression when knockout matches cannot be played, the four higher-seeded teams advanced directly to the semifinals.
Sri Lanka vs Nepal: Match called off before toss
The Sri Lanka-Nepal quarter-final, scheduled in Nishin, was abandoned before the toss after heavy rain made play impossible.
Sri Lanka progressed because it entered the tournament as one of the four top-seeded teams, alongside India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Bangladesh advances without playing
Bangladesh's quarter-final against Malaysia was also washed out, with the match cancelled well before the scheduled toss.
The higher-ranked Bangladesh side advanced to the semifinals and will now face Pakistan.
India and Pakistan also benefited from higher seeding
Earlier, rain had already washed out Monday's quarter-finals involving India and Pakistan.
India advanced after its match against Afghanistan was abandoned.
Pakistan progressed after its match against Hong Kong was called off.
Both teams secured semifinal spots because of their superior tournament seeding.
Can Sri Lanka stop India's title defence?
Defending champion India now faces Sri Lanka in a crucial semifinal.
The tournament rules also favour India if rain disrupts the semifinal, as the higher-seeded team would progress to the final if no play is possible.
Sri Lanka will be looking to improve on its previous Asian Games campaign after suffering an early exit in Hangzhou.

Bangladesh has a strong history in Asian Games cricket.

2014: Won bronze.
Hangzhou 2022 (held in 2023): Won bronze after defeating Pakistan in the bronze medal match following a semifinal defeat to India.
