Be alert if the network suddenly disappears from your phone! It could be a SIM swap fraud; here’s how to stay safe.

A sudden loss of mobile network is often dismissed as a routine telecom issue. However, cybersecurity experts and government authorities are now warning that prolonged signal loss could be a sign of a dangerous cybercrime known as a SIM swap attack.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) recently alerted citizens through a social media advisory, urging users not to ignore situations where their phone unexpectedly loses connectivity for several hours.

Cybercriminals are increasingly using SIM swap scams to gain access to victims’ bank accounts, social media profiles, and sensitive personal data.

What Is a SIM Swap Attack?

A SIM swap scam occurs when fraudsters trick a telecom operator into transferring a victim’s mobile number to a SIM card controlled by the scammer.

Once the transfer is complete, the criminal begins receiving all incoming calls, SMS messages, and One-Time Passwords (OTPs) linked to the victim’s number. This allows hackers to bypass two-factor authentication and potentially gain access to:

Banking apps

UPI accounts

Email accounts

Social media profiles

Cryptocurrency wallets

Since many online platforms rely on phone numbers for identity verification, losing control of your SIM card can expose multiple accounts to cybercriminals.

Government Warns Against Ignoring Signal Loss

According to MeitY’s advisory shared on X (formerly Twitter), users should remain cautious if their phone suddenly stops receiving calls or messages and remains disconnected from the network for an unusually long period.

While temporary outages are common, unexplained and prolonged loss of signal may indicate that someone has tampered with your SIM card or initiated a fraudulent SIM replacement request.

Cybersecurity experts say scammers often collect personal information through phishing calls, fake KYC updates, leaked databases, or social engineering before targeting victims with SIM swap fraud.

Signs Your SIM May Have Been Swapped

Users should immediately investigate if they notice the following warning signs:

Sudden loss of mobile network without reason

Unable to make or receive calls

SMS messages stop arriving

Banking OTPs not received

Unexpected alerts about SIM activation

Unauthorized login attempts on accounts

If these symptoms appear simultaneously, quick action becomes critical.

What To Do If You Suspect a SIM Swap Scam

Authorities recommend taking immediate steps to prevent financial fraud and identity theft.

1. Contact Your Telecom Operator

Use another phone to call your mobile service provider and confirm whether any SIM replacement or account changes were recently requested.

2. Report the Incident Immediately

If unauthorized changes are detected, contact India’s cybercrime helpline at 1930 and file a complaint as quickly as possible.

You can also report cyber fraud online through the official portal:

National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal

3. Secure Your Bank Accounts

Temporarily block online banking, UPI apps, and linked payment services until your number is restored.

4. Change Passwords

Update passwords for email, banking, and social media accounts immediately, especially if they are linked to your compromised phone number.

How To Protect Yourself From SIM Swap Fraud

Cybersecurity experts recommend the following precautions:

Never share OTPs or SIM-related details

Avoid clicking suspicious links

Enable app-based authentication instead of SMS OTPs

Use strong passwords and two-factor authentication

Monitor telecom alerts carefully

Regularly check banking activity

With cyber fraud cases increasing across India, awareness and immediate response remain the strongest defense against SIM swap scams.
