Russia demanded an international investigation into the alleged sabotage of gas pipelines from Russia to Europe – Nord Stream-1 and Nord Stream-2 and brought a resolution to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for this, but the UNSC did not support the proposal. Russian news agency Tass reported that the UNSC on Monday did not support a proposal by Russia and China on an international investigation into the sabotage of the Nord Stream.
A UN Security Council meeting on Monday (March 27) rejected Moscow's motion calling for an independent investigation into last year's sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines from Russia to Germany. Western countries have blamed Russia for the September 2022 explosions under the Baltic Sea, but Russia has blamed the devastation on the West.
Only three countries supported the proposal of Russia and China and 12 countries abstained. Thus, the proposal failed to receive the nine votes needed for approval. The resolution was supported by Russia, China, and Brazil, while Albania, Britain, Gabon, Ghana, Malta, Mozambique, UAE, the US, France, Switzerland, Ecuador, and Japan abstained.
The resolution was also supported by Belarus, Venezuela, the DPRK, Nicaragua, Syria, and Eritrea. However, these countries are not members of the Security Council, so they did not participate in the voting. Explain that to adopt a resolution in the UNSC, there should be the support of at least nine Security Council members. It can be vetoed by any of the permanent members, but this can happen only if the required number of votes is obtained for the motion to be passed. If the proposal receives eight votes and the US votes against it, it means that the veto was not used. However, if the document receives nine or more votes, the veto power is lost if it is voted against. will be used.
Russia accused of bias after voting
"We are very concerned about the fairness and transparency of national investigations commissioned by some European states," said Vasily Nebenzia, Russia's ambassador to the United Nations. He pointed to the growing suspicion that the purpose of the three investigations "is not to shed light on what happened with the acts of sabotage, but to hide evidence and clean up the crime scene". After the vote, doubts have become clear as to who is behind the sabotage of the Nord Stream.
Did America arrange a blast in the Nord Stream gas pipeline?
The sensational claim of US journalist Seymour Hersh has been debunked. The journalist claimed that the Nord Stream underwater gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea was blown up at the behest of US President Joe Biden. The claim was that US Navy divers with the help of Norway planted explosives on the pipelines last June and detonated them three months later.
