The Drug Controller General of India DCGI has approved Bharat Biotech's Covaxin for emergency use for children in the age group of 6 to 12 years. Apart from this, Zydus Cadila's Zycov D vaccine has also been approved for emergency use for children above 12 years of age.
The decision comes after a meeting of the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI)'s Subject Expert Committee (SEC), in which Bharat Biotech's Covaxin was asked for data on the application of Covaxin to children in the age group of 2-12 years.
Now children will get three vaccines
Currently, the Corbevax vaccine is being given to children aged 12-14 years. Children of 15-17 years are being given a dose of Covaxin. After the approval received today, a total of 3 corona vaccines will be administered to children aged 6 to 12 years and above in the country.
Corbevax awaits approval
DCGI's Subject Expert Committee (SEC) had recently recommended the emergency use of the Corbevax vaccine on children aged 5 to 11 years. The panel held a meeting on this issue last Thursday. Corbevax is the first indigenously developed RBD protein sub-unit vaccine by Hyderabad-based company Biological E.
A total of 12.66 crore children in the age group of 12 to 17 years were vaccinated.
The corona vaccine for children in the country was started on 3 January. Initially, Covaxin was being administered only to children aged 15 to 17 years. Later on March 16, vaccination was started for children above 12 years of age.
According to the Health Ministry, the corona vaccination for children in the age group of 12-14 years was started on 16 March 2022. Till now he has been given 2.7 crores (1st dose) and 37 lakhs (2nd dose). At the same time, 5.82 crore first doses and 4.15 crore second doses have been administered to children in the age group of 15-18 years.
