The rain of calamity has stopped in Uttarakhand. Now slowly the reality of the loss is coming to the fore. The situation in the revenue village Chukum, situated between the forest and the river in Ramnagar block of Nainital district, has worsened due to floods. More than 20 houses, including the village head, have been washed away. Field barn land and paddy crop have been affected by the floods. Frightened by the floods, villagers are forced to live in tents in the forest.

The revenue village Chukum, spread over an area of 15 hectares under Ramnagar Tehsil, is situated across the Kosi river. In the absence of a bridge, the villagers are compelled to cross the river. The flood in the Kosi river due to two days of rain became a problem for Chukum village. The flood of the river reached half the village and engulfed the houses of the villagers. The houses of about 20 villagers in the village have collapsed and been washed away. Several acres of agricultural land and paddy crop in the village were also washed away in the water. Farms are turning into barns.

When the water increased, the villagers took refuge in the forest

On Monday, the villagers moved to safer places at night as the water increased. Many villagers have taken shelter in the forest by putting up tents. Pets are roaming around. In such a situation, the villagers are also at risk from violent animals. The village head Seema Arya told that the water level of the river has started decreasing. But the flood has caused a lot of damage to the village. To date, the demand for displacement has not been fulfilled.

Relief will be available only when the water level of the river decreases

Relief can be reached to the villagers only after the water level of the Kosi river recedes. Because to reach the village one has to swim in the river. Due to the rising water level, no one can dare to go to the village right now. However, some youths are talking about trying to cross by taking a raft. So that the situation of the village can be known and help can be provided to the people.
