Afghanistan have secured direct qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup after defeating Ireland by three wickets in the third ODI in Belfast on Monday.
Chasing a target of 207, Afghanistan reached 207/7 in 44.5 overs to complete a memorable victory. Ireland had earlier been bowled out for 206 in 46.3 overs.
The win also gave Afghanistan an unassailable 2-0 lead in the five-match ODI series and confirmed their place among the teams that will feature in the 2027 World Cup.
Rashid Khan Leads Afghanistan to World Cup Qualification
Rashid Khan was the standout performer for Afghanistan, producing an impressive all-round display.
The Afghanistan star first played a key role with the ball, taking 3 wickets, before returning to guide his team over the finishing line with an unbeaten 37 runs off 43 balls.
Rashid struck four boundaries during his crucial innings and remained at the crease when Afghanistan completed the chase.
His performance proved particularly important after Afghanistan slipped to 176/7, leaving the visitors in a difficult position.
Rashid and Yamin Ahmadzai Finish the Chase
With Afghanistan seven wickets down, Rashid Khan and Yamin Ahmadzai combined to complete the victory.
Rashid played the attacking role while Ahmadzai provided valuable support. Ahmadzai remained unbeaten on 4 from 26 balls as the pair guided Afghanistan to the target in 44.5 overs.
Afghanistan eventually won by three wickets with 31 balls remaining.
Afghanistan Bowl Ireland Out for 206
After winning the toss, Afghanistan elected to bowl first in Belfast.
Their bowlers kept Ireland under pressure throughout the innings and eventually dismissed the hosts for 206 runs in 46.3 overs.
Rashid Khan's three-wicket contribution was central to Afghanistan's bowling effort and helped keep the target within reach.
Afghanistan then negotiated the chase despite losing wickets at regular intervals.
How Did Afghanistan Qualify for the 2027 ODI World Cup?
Afghanistan's qualification is based on their position in the ICC ODI rankings.
The top eight teams in the rankings by the September 30, 2026 cut-off are set to qualify directly for the 2027 ODI World Cup, alongside the hosts.
Afghanistan entered the Ireland series inside the qualification zone and strengthened their position by winning consecutive matches against Ireland.
Following the latest victory, Afghanistan have secured their place in the top eight for the qualification cut-off.
West Indies Face World Cup Qualifier Route
Afghanistan's direct qualification is bad news for the West Indies, who will now have to go through the World Cup Qualifier route.
The West Indies are currently outside the top-eight qualification positions. Reports indicate that even victories in their upcoming ODI matches against India would not be enough to move them into the direct qualification places before the cut-off.
The West Indies previously missed the 2023 ODI World Cup after failing to qualify through the qualifying tournament and will once again have to take the longer route to the 2027 edition.
Afghanistan Set for Fourth ODI World Cup Appearance
The 2027 tournament will mark Afghanistan's fourth appearance at an ODI World Cup.
The team made its World Cup debut in 2015, before returning for the 2019 and 2023 editions.
Afghanistan's progress in international cricket has been particularly impressive over the past decade, with the team developing into a competitive force in the ODI format.
Their qualification for the 2027 tournament continues that upward trajectory.
Where Will the 2027 ODI World Cup Be Held?
The 2027 ODI World Cup will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
Afghanistan's qualification means the team will have another opportunity to compete on the biggest stage of 50-over cricket.
The tournament is expected to feature several of the world's leading cricket teams, with the qualification race continuing for the remaining places.

Rashid Khan's All-Round Performance Steals the Show
Rashid Khan's contribution was the defining feature of Afghanistan's victory.
His three wickets helped restrict Ireland to a manageable total, while his unbeaten 37 then provided the composure Afghanistan needed during a tense chase.
With seven wickets down and the target still within sight, Rashid held his nerve and guided Afghanistan across the line alongside Yamin Ahmadzai.
The performance underlined Rashid's importance to Afghanistan as the team prepares for another ODI World Cup campaign.
