Ladakh environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk, who was arrested after the violent protests in Leh on September 24, has urged people to continue their struggle peacefully.

Wangchuk sent a message from jail.

In a message from Jodhpur Central Jail, Wangchuk stated that he is willing to remain in jail until a judicial inquiry into the violent protests in Leh and the subsequent actions of the Ladakh police and security forces. Wangchuk's elder brother, Kasetan Dorjey Ley, and his lawyer, Mustafa Haji, shared this message with the people of Ladakh after meeting him in Jodhpur on Saturday.

Expressed gratitude for public support

In a message from jail, Wangchuk stated that he is physically and mentally healthy and is grateful to the public for their support. Expressing condolences to the families of the four people killed during the violence in Ladakh and praying for the injured and those arrested, Wangchuk clarified that an independent judicial inquiry into the deaths is necessary. He is willing to remain in jail until this inquiry is completed.

Ladakh Administration Orders Magisterial Inquiry

The Ladakh administration has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the situation on September 24th. However, the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance are demanding a judicial inquiry by a retired Supreme Court judge. Of the 70 Leh residents detained following the protests, 30 have been released so far. Efforts are underway to free the remaining 40.

Efforts to Normalize the Situation

The Ladakh administration is working to normalize the situation. Ladakh Chief Secretary Dr. Pawan Kotwal stated that the central government is committed to protecting the interests of Ladakh and restoring dialogue.

He stated that the increase in Scheduled Tribe reservation from 45 percent to 85 percent, granting one-third reservation to women in Hill Councils, recognition of Bhoti and Purgi languages, and the filling of over 3,000 posts are achievements of the negotiations with the central government.

Supported the demands of the Apex Body and KDA

Wangchuk expressed his full support for the Apex Body and KDA's demands for the Sixth Schedule and statehood, and appealed to the public to continue their struggle in unity and peacefully, in a Gandhian manner. Meanwhile, in light of the protests in Leh, most political, religious, and social organizations in Leh and Kargil are also fully supporting Ladakh's regional issues.

In this context, Dr. Zafar Akhun, Chief Executive Councillor of the Kargil Hill Development Council, visited Leh to offer support to the families of the deceased and injured. He visited the SNM Hospital in Leh and met with the residents of Leh and their families who were injured during the protests.
