Guwahati, March 4 (IANS) Poachers have killed yet another one-horned rhino, the sixth this year, inside the heavily-protected Kaziranga National Park, a Unesco World Heritage Site, officials said on Wednesday.
Forest guards on Wednesday found a rhino carcass from the Burhapahar range of the park. The rhino had bullet injuries and its horn was taken away by poachers, forest officials said.
Park officials suspect that the animal was killed on Tuesday night.
Assam Governor P.B. Acharya has asked park director M.K. Yadav to submit a report as to what was lacking as far as protection of rhinos was concerned.
Acharya and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi were recently at loggerheads over the killing of rhinos.
Acharya said "another agency" can be engaged to protect the species if the present one has failed. This led Gogoi to say that the governor was crossing the line.
Gogoi later said he did not mean what he said earlier.
The governor had also favoured a complete overhaul of the security arrangements at the park and deploy the army, if needed, to secure the rhinos.
