At its highly anticipated WWDC 2026 event, Apple unveiled a major upgrade to its child safety and parental control ecosystem. The tech giant introduced a comprehensive new Child Safety System aimed at helping parents better protect children online while giving them greater control over screen time, app usage, and digital interactions.

The new safety features will roll out later this year through updates to iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27.

What Is Apple’s New Child Safety System?

Apple’s latest Child Safety toolkit is designed to create a safer digital environment for children across iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices. The system combines AI-powered monitoring, stronger parental controls, communication safeguards, and content restrictions to protect children from harmful online experiences.

According to Apple, the new tools will allow parents to:

Control what content children can view

Decide which apps can be used

Monitor online interactions

Set screen time limits

Restrict access to inappropriate websites and content

The company says the system has been built with privacy and age-appropriate digital safety as top priorities.

‘Child Accounts’ to Become a Core Safety Feature

One of the biggest announcements at WWDC 2026 was the expansion of Apple’s ‘Child Accounts’ feature.

These accounts are specifically designed for younger users and automatically apply protections based on the child’s age. Features include:

Blocking adult websites

Restricting age-inappropriate apps and content

Safer App Store recommendations

Enhanced communication controls

Apple confirmed that Child Accounts will become mandatory for users under the age of 13, while optional safety protections will remain available for teenagers up to 18 years old.

Parents Can Now Control App Access

With the upcoming updates, parents will gain far more control over app usage.

They will be able to:

Approve only essential apps

Allow apps recommended by Apple

Create custom app access permissions

Add or remove apps over time

This gives parents the flexibility to customize digital access based on their child’s age and needs.

New ‘Ask to Browse’ Feature Enhances Web Safety

Apple has also introduced a new feature called “Ask to Browse.”

Under this system:

Children must request parental permission before visiting unfamiliar websites in Safari

The feature works across iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices

Parents receive approval requests before access is granted

The move is aimed at preventing accidental exposure to harmful or inappropriate online content.

Safer Communication Through Contact Controls

Apple is strengthening protections around messaging and online communication as well.

Parents will now have the ability to control who their children can communicate with via:

Messages

FaceTime

Phone calls

If a child wants to contact a new person, parental approval will be required first.

This feature is designed to reduce risks associated with unknown contacts, scams, and online predators.

New Screen Time and ‘Time Allowances’ Features

Apple is also upgrading its Screen Time tools with a new feature called “Time Allowances.”

Using this feature, parents can:

Set time limits for games and social media apps

Restrict entertainment app usage

Schedule device downtime

Monitor overall screen activity

The company says these updates are intended to help families create healthier digital habits for children.

AI and Privacy at the Center of the Update

Apple emphasized that the new child safety system has been designed with a strong focus on privacy. Much of the processing will reportedly happen directly on-device using AI, reducing the need to send sensitive data to external servers.

The announcement reflects the growing global demand for stronger digital safety tools as children spend increasing amounts of time online.

When Will the Features Be Available?

The new child safety features will begin rolling out later this year alongside:

iOS 27

iPadOS 27

macOS 27

Developer previews are expected immediately after WWDC 2026, while public beta versions may arrive in the coming months before the official global rollout.
