OpenAI has launched its latest frontier AI model, describing it as its most intelligent and aligned model yet. The company says Astra represents a major advance in computer use, software engineering, scientific analysis and professional work.

Unlike conventional chatbots that primarily generate text in response to prompts, GPT-6 Astra is designed to use computers and complete multi-step workflows. OpenAI says the model can conduct online research, fill out forms, update records, analyse scientific data, create plots, build websites and perform frontend quality checks.

OpenAI President Greg Brockman has described Astra's arrival as a major leap in AI capabilities and linked the launch to what he calls the beginning of the AGI era. Because of these capabilities, OpenAI is applying additional safeguards and restricting access to the most powerful cybersecurity functions.

Access is being rolled out gradually

Astra is not being made available with every advanced capability to everyone at once. OpenAI is using a staged rollout, with specialized cybersecurity access handled separately through controlled programs for trusted defenders. The company says the broader model is being rolled out to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users, with API and cloud access also planned.

The launch was not completely smooth. Several reports said some paying ChatGPT users initially struggled to access Astra, prompting OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to apologize for what he described as a “messy rollout.”
