Apple’s New Anti-Theft Feature for iPhone: Stolen Devices May Instantly Auto-Lock and Turn Into a ‘Brick’ for Thieves

Posted on 28th May 2026 02:58 pm by rohit kumar

Tech giant Apple is reportedly working on a new intelligent anti-theft security feature for iPhones that could automatically lock the device the moment it is snatched from a user’s hand.

The upcoming feature is designed to provide stronger protection for users who often use their phones while traveling or walking in public places—situations where mobile snatching incidents are increasingly common.

If implemented successfully, the feature could make stolen iPhones nearly useless for thieves by instantly blocking access to sensitive data and critical account settings.

Why Is Apple Introducing This Feature?

In many phone-snatching incidents, the device is already unlocked when stolen. This gives thieves immediate access to:

Personal photos and messages

Banking apps

Password managers

Emails and private accounts

Apple ID settings

Although Apple already offers security tools such as:

Find My iPhone

Activation Lock

Stolen Device Protection

these features become less effective when the device is actively unlocked during the theft.

The new auto-lock feature aims to solve this exact problem.

How Will the New iPhone Theft Detection Feature Work?

According to reports, Apple’s new system will use multiple smart technologies to detect suspicious snatching activity in real time.

Motion Sensors and Accelerometer Detection

The iPhone’s built-in motion sensors will detect:

Sudden jerks

Rapid movement

Forceful pulling motion

These signals may help the system determine that the phone has been forcibly taken away.

Apple Watch Distance Monitoring

If the user is wearing an Apple Watch, the iPhone may detect sudden separation from the owner.

If the device rapidly moves away from the watch or user location, the system could trigger theft protection immediately.

Location and Trusted Network Verification

The feature may also work alongside Apple’s existing Stolen Device Protection system by checking:

Whether the phone is in an unfamiliar location

Whether it has disconnected from trusted Wi-Fi networks

Whether suspicious movement patterns are detected

What Happens After Theft Is Detected?

Once the system suspects that the device has been stolen, the iPhone is expected to:

Instantly lock the screen

Block access to sensitive settings

Restrict Apple ID changes

Prevent password modifications

Stop unauthorized account access

This would effectively turn the device into a “brick” for thieves unless the rightful owner unlocks it.

Similar to Android’s Theft Detection Lock

Industry experts believe Apple’s upcoming feature could function similarly to Android’s Theft Detection Lock, which already uses AI and motion detection to identify potential theft situations.

However, Apple is expected to integrate the feature more deeply into its security ecosystem using:

Apple Watch connectivity

Trusted locations

iCloud security

Stolen Device Protection

When Will Apple Launch This Feature?

According to reports from tech platform 9to5Mac, references to the feature have already been discovered in Apple’s testing code, indicating that development is actively underway.

Although Apple has not officially confirmed a launch timeline, the feature is expected to arrive through a future iOS update.

iPhone Security Becoming More Advanced

Apple has been steadily expanding its anti-theft and privacy-focused ecosystem over recent years. With smartphone theft cases increasing globally, this upcoming feature could become one of the company’s most important security upgrades for iPhone users.

If rolled out successfully, the feature may offer users stronger real-time protection against theft while safeguarding sensitive personal and financial information from cybercriminals.
