Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa finished at the top of the Rapid standings at the St. Louis Rapid & Blitz tournament in the United States. Praggnanandhaa collected 12 points from 18 possible points to establish a one-point lead over the chasing pack. However, the tournament title is still up for grabs, with 18 blitz games set to determine the champion.
The strong Rapid performance has also boosted Praggnanandhaa's hopes of securing a place in the Grand Chess Tour Finals, which are scheduled to take place later this year.
Praggnanandhaa Retains Lead Despite Final-Round Loss
Praggnanandhaa suffered a defeat against Dutch Grandmaster Jorden van Foreest in the ninth and final round of the Rapid section.
Despite the setback, the Indian star retained the top position with 12 points.
His overall Rapid record included four wins, four draws and one defeat, giving him a narrow but valuable lead heading into the decisive blitz stage.
Sindarov and Wesley So Close Behind
Uzbekistan's Javokhir Sindarov and American Grandmaster Wesley So finished the Rapid stage tied for second with 11 points each.
Sindarov will also be in the spotlight later this year as he is scheduled to challenge India's D Gukesh in the World Championship.
The one-point gap means Praggnanandhaa cannot afford to relax during the blitz section, where the standings could change rapidly.
18 Blitz Games Will Decide the Champion
The Rapid portion of the tournament is now complete, but the winner has not yet been determined.
The players will now compete in 18 blitz games, with the final standings deciding the tournament champion.
The event carries a total prize pool of $200,000 (around ₹1.67 crore), while the eventual winner will take home $50,000 (approximately ₹42 lakh).
With every blitz victory worth a point, Praggnanandhaa's current lead will be under serious pressure.
Keymer and Sindarov Pose Major Threat
Several leading grandmasters remain within striking distance.
Levon Aronian, Leinier Dominguez, Anish Giri and Vincent Keymer are tied for fourth place with nine points each.
Among the challengers, Vincent Keymer and Javokhir Sindarov are expected to pose a particularly strong threat to Praggnanandhaa during the blitz stage.
The fast-paced format could significantly alter the standings, making the final 18 games crucial to the title race.
Grand Chess Tour Action Continues
The St. Louis Rapid & Blitz is part of the prestigious Grand Chess Tour, which brings together some of the world's strongest chess players.
Following the Rapid & Blitz event, attention will turn to the Sinquefield Cup, another major Grand Chess Tour event that will be played in the classical format.
For Praggnanandhaa, staying at the top in St. Louis would represent another significant achievement on the international chess circuit while strengthening his hopes of qualifying for the Grand Chess Tour Finals.
Praggnanandhaa's Road to the Title
With a one-point advantage after the Rapid stage, Praggnanandhaa has put himself in a strong position. However, the championship remains wide open.
The upcoming 18 blitz games will test his speed, consistency and ability to handle pressure. With Sindarov, Wesley So, Keymer and other elite players within reach, the battle for the St. Louis title promises to go down to the wire.
