Asian Games 2026: Mirabai Chanu Wins Silver After 28 Years, Roshibina Devi Also Claims Wushu Silver

India added to its medal tally at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games as Mirabai Chanu won silver in the women's 49kg weightlifting event, ending the country's 28-year wait for an Asian Games weightlifting medal. Later, Roshibina Devi also claimed silver in the women's 60kg Sanda final, giving India another podium finish.

Mirabai's silver is India's first Asian Games weightlifting medal since Karnam Malleswari won silver in 1998. It is also Mirabai's first Asian Games medal after previous appearances at the continental event.

Mirabai Chanu Wins Silver in Women's 49kg Weightlifting

Mirabai Chanu finished second in the women's 49kg category with a combined lift of 198kg. She lifted 87kg in the snatch before producing a 111kg clean and jerk.

North Korea's Ri Song Gum won gold with a total of 215kg, while Indonesia's Luluk Diana Tri Wijayana took bronze with 191kg.

The silver marked Mirabai's maiden Asian Games medal. The 32-year-old Indian weightlifter has already won major medals at the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games and World Championships, and her latest performance adds an Asian Games medal to her international résumé.

India Ends 28-Year Weightlifting Medal Drought

Mirabai's silver ended India's long wait for a weightlifting medal at the Asian Games. Karnam Malleswari was the last Indian weightlifter to win an Asiad medal, taking silver in 1998.

The result makes Mirabai the latest Indian weightlifting star to reach the Asian Games podium after a gap of 28 years.

Roshibina Devi Wins Wushu Silver

Roshibina Devi followed Mirabai's achievement by winning silver in the women's 60kg Sanda event.

The Indian wushu athlete reached the final after defeating Indonesia's Thania Kusumaningtyas in the semifinal. In the gold-medal bout, Roshibina lost 0-2 to China's Zhang Xiaoyu, who won both rounds 5-0.

Roshibina's silver is her second consecutive Asian Games silver medal. She had previously won bronze at the 2018 Asian Games and silver at the 2023 Hangzhou Games, making her the first Indian wushu athlete to win medals at three successive editions of the Asian Games.

India Adds Medals in Shooting and Soft Tennis

India also collected medals in shooting and soft tennis during the Games.

The women's skeet team of Raiza Dhillon, Maheshwari Chauhan and Parinaaz Dhaliwal won bronze after scoring 331 points. The men's skeet team of Anantjeet Singh Naruka, Mairaj Ahmad Khan and Bhavtegh Singh Gill also secured bronze.

Jay Meena added another bronze for India in men's singles soft tennis, marking India's first Asian Games medal in the discipline.

Manu Bhaker Finishes Fifth in 10m Air Pistol

India's Manu Bhaker narrowly missed out on a medal in the women's 10m air pistol event, finishing fifth.

India also missed the women's team medal in the event despite matching Vietnam's score at 1,719 points. The tie was decided using the number of perfect 10s, with Vietnam recording 46 compared with India's 44. China won gold with 1,735 points, while South Korea took silver with 1,730.

Following the latest results, India has 14 medals — one gold, six silver and seven bronze as of September 24. India's gold came from the women's cricket team.
