Anil Agarwal-led Vedanta Group's power business is set for a major index inclusion, with Vedanta Power scheduled to enter the Nifty 500 and Nifty Smallcap 250 indices from September 30, 2026. The changes will take effect after the close of trading on September 29.
The inclusion comes shortly after Vedanta Power's listing on the stock exchanges following the demerger of Vedanta's businesses. Along with Nifty 500 and Nifty Smallcap 250, Vedanta Power will also become part of the Nifty Mid-Smallcap 400 and Nifty Smallcap 500 indices.
Vedanta Power to Join Nifty 500
Vedanta Power is among the companies scheduled for inclusion in the Nifty 500 index from September 30. Other Vedanta Group businesses, including Vedanta Iron and Steel, Vedanta Oil and Gas, and Vedanta Aluminium Metal, are also set to enter the Nifty 500 as part of the index changes.
The Nifty indices are widely used as market benchmarks, and NSE Indices says its Nifty index family serves as the benchmark for a large number of ETFs and index funds in India.
However, index inclusion by itself does not guarantee a particular share-price performance, valuation change or level of fund inflows. Analysts cited in recent reports have described the inclusion as potentially improving visibility and liquidity, while noting that it should not be viewed as a standalone fundamental trigger.
Vedanta Power Capacity Expansion Plans
The index inclusion comes as Vedanta Power works on expanding its electricity-generation capacity.
Recent management commentary indicates that the company is targeting 12 GW of capacity by FY33, with growth expected through a combination of organic expansion, acquisitions and captive opportunities. CEO Rajinder Singh Ahuja said the company is evaluating both organic and inorganic routes, including brownfield expansions at existing sites.
Vedanta Power's official website currently lists 4,780 MW of installed capacity across four assets in Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha.
The company's business portfolio includes the Talwandi Sabo thermal plant in Punjab, Meenakshi Energy in Andhra Pradesh, Sakti Thermal Plant in Chhattisgarh and the Jharsuguda thermal plant in Odisha.
Vedanta Power's Sustainability Initiatives
Vedanta Power is also pursuing measures aimed at reducing the environmental impact of its thermal-power operations.
At its Talwandi Sabo Thermal Plant, the company reports biomass co-firing of around 5% and highlights initiatives involving energy efficiency, water management and ash utilisation. Its official website says the plant has reached the 5% biomass co-firing level.
The company has also stated longer-term objectives around reducing greenhouse-gas emissions and improving resource efficiency, including an ambition to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 or earlier.
Vedanta Power Stock and Index Inclusion: What Investors Should Know
The upcoming Nifty 500 inclusion increases the number of major market benchmarks in which Vedanta Power will be represented. This can increase the stock's visibility among investors and potentially affect index-linked trading activity.
However, index inclusion does not automatically mean that investors will earn higher returns. Share-price performance will continue to depend on factors including earnings, capacity expansion, commodity prices, debt levels, operating performance and broader market conditions.
For investors tracking Vedanta Power, the September 30 index inclusion and the company's longer-term capacity-expansion plans are therefore two separate developments to monitor.
