A controversial incident has come to light amid increasing cases of atrocities on minority Hindus in Bangladesh. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) senior joint general secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi burnt his wife's Indian sari during an anti-India protest in Dhaka. During this, he called for a boycott of Indian products.
Rizvi protested against the alleged vandalism at the Bangladesh High Commission in Tripura and the insult to the Bangladeshi flag. According to media reports, he publicly burned the Indian sari and appealed to the people not to buy Indian goods. He said, "We will not support those who have insulted our national flag by buying their goods. Our mothers and sisters will no longer wear Indian sarees."
Appeal to boycott Indian products
During the protest, Rizvi also said that Bangladesh would not use things like Indian soap and toothpaste and would grow products like chili and papaya on its own if needed. Accusing India of weakening Bangladesh's sovereignty, he said that boycotting products coming from India would be the most peaceful and effective response.
Message of self-reliant Bangladesh
Rizvi claimed that Bangladesh is self-reliant and can make everything it needs on its own. He said, "We do not need Indian products. Instead, we should invest in our own resources to strengthen our economy."
Impact on India-Bangladesh relations
During the protest, Rizvi also targeted Indian leaders and media, accusing them of spreading false news. He said that this is having a negative impact on the relations between the two countries. At the same time, he talked about respecting Bangladesh's sovereignty and said that Bangladesh will not tolerate any kind of wrong conduct.
Agartala incident: Root of controversy
Last Monday, an incident of alleged vandalism by some unidentified people was reported at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala, Tripura. The Indian Foreign Ministry condemned the incident and ordered action against the concerned policemen. During the investigation of the incident, seven people were arrested, and the police have assured to take appropriate action.
