Dr. Balram Bhargava, Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), has said that in districts of the country where the corona infection rate is more than 10%, the lockdown should be extended for 6 to 8 weeks. Only then can this deadly epidemic be controlled.
This is the first statement made by a top central government official in support of a strict and prolonged lockdown. He cited the example of Delhi, where the infection rate was once more than 35% and now it has come down to 17%. However, the central government seems to be avoiding a lockdown in the entire country.
