Pune Police on Monday justified in a court the complaint filed by Rahul Gandhi accusing him of defaming Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. In the complaint, the Congress leader was accused of defaming the Hindutva idea in a speech in London in 2023.
Complainant Satyaki Ashok Savarkar's lawyer Sangram Kolhatkar said that the report was submitted in the court of Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Akshi Jain. Kolhatkar said that the court can issue a notice to Rahul Gandhi and ask him to appear. Satyaki Savarkar had filed a defamation case under sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code in April 2023 and had moved to the city court. The court had asked Vishrambagh police to verify the evidence submitted by Satyaki and submit the report by May 27.
Kolhatkar said that in the complaint, Rahul Gandhi was accused of making false claims about the late revolutionary (VD Savarkar) in a speech in London in March 2023. According to the complaint, Rahul Gandhi claimed in his speech that VD Savarkar had written in a book that he and five to six of his friends had once beaten up a Muslim man and he (Savarkar) was happy with it.
In the complaint, Rahul Gandhi's allegations were described as imaginary, false, and malicious. In this, Satyaki Savarkar had said that no such incident had ever happened and VD Savarkar had never written anything like this. Kolhatkar said, Vishrambagh police presented a report before the court today and told the court that their investigation has revealed that VD Savarkar had not written about such an incident in any of his books. But despite this, Rahul Gandhi made such remarks during his speech in London in March 2023 and defamed Savarkar.
Police said that the complaint filed by Satyaki Savarkar is prima facie true that Rahul Gandhi had defamed VD Savarkar in his speech. When contacted, Assistant Police Inspector Tukaram Nimbalkar confirmed that the report had been submitted to the court.
