The BJP on Thursday said that US President Donald Trump's remarks on USAID funding to India confirm Prime Minister Narendra Modi's claim during the Lok Sabha election campaign that foreign powers are trying to prevent him from coming to power.
The ruling party accused Rahul Gandhi of working as a tool of foreign agencies. On the other hand, the Congress said that the government should bring a white paper on USAID funding in India. The opposition party has termed Trump's claim as meaningless.
Amit Malviya made allegations
BJP IT department chief Amit Malviya said that Rahul Gandhi has linked himself to a global network that is trying to undermine India's interests. He is working as a tool for foreign agencies.
Addressing an event in Miami on Thursday, Trump questioned the funding of $ 21 million by USAID to increase voter turnout in India. Said, 'I think he (Biden administration) was trying to get someone else elected.'
After Trump's comment, Malviya posted on X that Prime Minister Modi had warned of foreign influence not once but on several occasions during the 2024 election campaign. Now US President Donald Trump has confirmed that there was indeed an attempt to influence the Indian election and bring someone other than Prime Minister Modi to power.
Rift between BJP and Congress
According to ANI, BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad accused opposition leader Rahul Gandhi of conspiring to weaken Indian democracy. The former Union minister, while talking to reporters, said that Donald Trump has confirmed that $21 million was given to influence voting in India. We have been raising this issue earlier as well. He was conspiring to weaken Indian democracy. He was appealing to make himself win the election. What the Congress has done is a matter of disgrace for the country. When Rahul Gandhi was abroad, he used to say that why don't big democratic countries worry about the threat to democracy in India?
On Trump's claims, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said in a post that USAID is in a lot of discussions these days. It was established on November 3, 1961. The claims being made by the US President are absurd, to say the least. Nevertheless, the Indian government should issue a white paper as soon as possible, which should contain details of USAID's funding to both government and non-government institutions in India during the last decades.
