Indeed, violent demonstrations took place in the United States a few days ago following the death of African-American black man George Floyd in police custody. Meanwhile, some protesters damaged the statue of Mahatma Gandhi by spray-painting it.
The incident took place outside the Indian Embassy in Washington DC on June 2 and June 3 at midnight. The embassy officials then filed a complaint with local law enforcement agencies. During remarks at the White House on Monday, Trump described the incident as abusive.
The Indian embassy has taken it up before the US State Department as well as the Metropolitan Police and the National Park Service for an initial investigation into the case. The US State Department, Metropolitan Police and the National Park Service are working together to restore the statue quickly.
During a visit to India in February, US President Trump and first lady Melania Trump spent some time at the Gandhi Ashram in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He was personally visited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Apart from this, Trump and Melania paid homage to Bapu's memorial site at Rajghat in New Delhi.
Last week, top US lawmakers and the Trump campaign condemned the mutilation of the statue.
