The parliamentary committee has made recommendations regarding the medium of instruction in technical and non-technical higher educational institutions like IITs. The committee has suggested that IITs should be taught in Hindi in Hindi-speaking states and local languages in other states of the country. It has also recommended that Hindi should be one of the official languages of the United Nations.
In its 11th report presented to President Draupadi Murmu last month, the Official Language Parliamentary Committee headed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah recommended that the local language should be given preference over English in all states. According to the committee, Hindi should be given a respectable place in A category states and the use of English should be made optional.
Category A includes the states and union territories of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Whereas, category B includes the states and union territories of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Punjab, Chandigarh, Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, while category C includes the states and union territories of the rest of India.
