Funding of 3 trusts of Gandhi family including Rajiv Gandhi Foundation to be investigated, Home Ministry constitutes committee

The Ministry of Home Affairs has constituted an inter-ministerial committee to investigate the alleged irregularities in financial transactions in three trusts belonging to the Gandhi family, including the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation. The Special Director of Enforcement Directorate will head this committee. The Inter-Ministerial Committee will also examine the Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust, Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust along with the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation.

 

An official of the Union Home Ministry has said on Wednesday that an inter-ministry committee has been set up by the ministry, which will examine the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust, and Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust.

It is being told that in this investigation, violation of the rules of Money Laundering Act, Income Tax Act, Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010 Act will be investigated.

 

What is the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation?

To fulfill the vision and dreams of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, this foundation was started on 21 June 1991 in his name. On the website of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, it has been told that from 1991 to 2009, the Foundation worked in the areas of Health, Education, Science, and Technology, Women and Child Development, Disability Cooperation, Physically Handicapped, Panchayati Raj, Natural Resource Management, etc. In 2010, the Foundation decided to focus on the education sector. Programs such as educational assistance to children affected by conflict, increased mobility of physically challenged youth, and financial assistance to meritorious Indian children to study in Cambridge, etc. are run by the Foundation.

Sonia Gandhi is the chairperson of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation. Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Finance Minister and senior Congress leaders P. Chidambaram, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Suman Dubey, Rahul Gandhi, Dr. Shekhar Raha, Professor MS Swaminathan, Dr. Ashok Ganguly, Sanjeev Goenka, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Foundation also Is a trustee of
