Mahanagar Gas on Friday once again dealt a blow to the general public, citing rising costs and a short supply of gas. Mahanagar Gas announced another hike in retail prices of auto fuel and LPG. The price of CNG has been increased by Rs 3.50 per kg and that of PNG by Rs 1.50 per kg. This is the second revision since October when the Center increased the price of domestically produced gas by up to 40 percent for the second half of the fiscal.
Prices were very low till April 1
On April 1, the price of CNG was Rs 60 per kg and that of piped cooking gas was Rs 36 per scm. The prices were lower after the state government reduced VAT on these fuels from 13.5 percent to 3.50 percent. MGL had cut the price of CNG by Rs 6 per kg and PNG by Rs 3.50. Justifying the price hike with the depreciating rupee, MGL said it will increase the retail price of CNG by Rs 3.50 per kg to Rs 89.50 and that of domestic piped natural gas (PNG) by Rs 1.50 per scm to Rs 54. which will be effective from this midnight.
On shortfall in the supply of APM gas, MGL said supply has been cut by 10 percent, forcing it to supply the fuel from outside at a much higher cost as the demand for gas is yet to subside. MGL claimed that even at the revised level, CNG is about 42 percent cheaper than petrol in the metropolis, while PNG is about 8 percent cheaper than the existing LPG.
