Total global fintech funding (in mergers and acquisitions, private equity, and venture capital) reached $210 billion in 2021 with a record 5,684 deals, an increase of $125 billion from 3,674 deals in 2020. This was claimed in a report on Tuesday. India has once again emerged on the global map with four of the top 10 fintech deals in the Asia-Pacific region. According to 'Pulse of Fintech H2'21', Fintech funding contributed $101 billion in the second half of last year. It has seen a steady increase. The report said that continued growth in interest in areas such as 'buy now, pay later, embedded banking and open banking aligned solutions has helped keep the payments space very strong.
Cyber security ($4.85 billion) and wealth tech ($1.62 billion) also saw record levels of investment. The value of cross-border fintech M&A deals more than tripled year-on-year -- to $36.2 billion. PE funding for fintech has more than doubled from its previous high, with $12.2 billion in investments in 2021 compared to $5.2 billion in 2018, the report said.
Globally, VC investment in fintech more than doubled year-on-year from $46 billion in 2020 to a record $115 billion in 2021. The US contributed $88 billion of the total funding and $52.7 billion in VC funding. Fintech investment in the Asia -Pacific region nearly doubled - from $14.7 billion in 2020 to $27.5 billion in 2021.
