Grok Update: X Cracks Down on Content Theft, Users Copying Posts Will Lose Monetization

Posted on 18th Jul 2026 04:09 pm by rohit kumar

Elon Musk-owned social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has introduced a major update to its creator monetization program, targeting users who earn money by reposting or copying content without permission. With the latest upgrade to Grok AI, the platform says it can now identify duplicate videos and copied posts much more accurately, ensuring that monetization rewards go to the rightful creators.

According to X, the latest version of Grok AI is three times more effective at identifying duplicate and stolen content than previous versions. The AI system can detect copied videos, reposted viral text, and content that has been slightly modified to avoid detection.

X's Head of Product, Nikita Bier, said the upgraded detection system can identify copied material even if users add their own watermark, intro, or make minor edits before uploading it.

Monetization to shift from copycats to original creators

One of the biggest changes in the new policy is that revenue generated from copied content will no longer go to users who repost it. Instead, X will transfer eligible impressions and earnings directly to the original content creator, helping protect intellectual property and reward authentic creators.

Over ₹8 crore recovered from fake monetization

X revealed that during a recent review, the platform detected nearly 1.5 million copied posts. As part of its enforcement drive, the company recovered more than $1 million (around ₹8.3 crore) that had been paid to accounts using stolen content. The recovered money has been redirected to the rightful creators.

X wants more original videos on the platform

To further encourage original content creation, X has also introduced a powerful built-in video recording and editing tool. The company hopes creators will produce and edit videos directly within the X app instead of reposting content from other platforms.

What this means for creators

The latest update signals a major shift in X's creator economy. Users relying on copied videos, viral reposts, or engagement bait could lose monetization, while original creators stand to benefit from stronger copyright protection and fairer revenue distribution.

As competition among social media platforms intensifies, X's AI-powered moderation system could redefine how creator rewards are distributed and discourage content theft across the platform.
