Shares of Muthoot Finance, India's largest gold loan company, plunged nearly 11% on August 3 after the company reported weaker-than-expected June quarter earnings. The sharp decline came as investors reacted negatively to pressure on profitability, falling net interest margins (NIMs), and a downgrade by global brokerage firm Jefferies.
The stock opened at ₹2,876 and slipped as much as 11% during early trade, touching an intraday low of ₹2,671.
Why Did Muthoot Finance Shares Fall 11%?
The primary trigger behind the sell-off was the company's June quarter (Q1 FY27) performance, which failed to meet market expectations despite strong growth in gold loan assets.
Key financial highlights include:
Revenue: ₹2,799 crore
Revenue decline: 16% year-on-year
Revenue from operations: ₹8,672 crore
Quarter-on-quarter decline: 7%
Profit After Tax (PAT): Up 25% YoY but below analyst estimates
While profit increased compared to last year, the earnings were significantly weaker than market expectations, leading to heavy selling pressure in the stock.
Jefferies Downgrades Muthoot Finance
Global brokerage Jefferies downgraded Muthoot Finance from a bullish stance to 'Hold' and reduced its target price to ₹3,300.
According to Jefferies, the company's Q1 earnings missed expectations by around 18%, primarily due to:
Sharp decline in Net Interest Margin (NIM)
Yield normalization
Loan rollover into lower-interest-rate slabs
Competitive pressure leading to interest rate cuts
The brokerage also reduced its FY27 and FY28 EPS estimates by 7–8%, projecting only 5% earnings growth in FY27.
NIM Pressure Remains a Key Concern
One of the biggest concerns highlighted by analysts is the significant decline in profitability margins.
Jefferies noted that:
NIM contracted sharply due to falling lending yields.
Increased competition in the gold loan segment has forced lenders to reduce rates.
Stable gold prices may limit future earnings growth.
As a result, the company may continue facing profitability challenges despite expanding its loan book.
Gold Loan AUM Shows Strong Growth
Despite margin pressure, Muthoot Finance reported strong growth in its core business.
Q1 Business Performance
Gold Loan AUM Growth: 43% YoY
Quarterly Growth: 6% QoQ
Higher Loan-to-Value (LTV) ratios supported growth.
New customer acquisition accelerated during the quarter.
The strong increase in Assets Under Management (AUM) reflects continued demand for gold-backed loans across the country.
Bernstein Remains Bullish, Sets ₹4,500 Target
Unlike Jefferies, global brokerage Bernstein maintained a positive outlook on the stock.
Bernstein has assigned a target price of ₹4,500, significantly higher than current market levels.
However, the brokerage acknowledged that:
Q1 results were mixed.
NIM declined by nearly 300 basis points (bps).
Asset yields normalized after exceptionally high levels seen during the second half of FY26.
According to Bernstein, management expects lending yields to stabilize between 18% and 18.5%, although profitability could remain under pressure due to:
Selective rate reductions
Rising share of lower-yield loans
Limited decline in funding costs
What Should Investors Watch?
Going forward, investors will closely monitor:
Gold loan demand trends
Net Interest Margin recovery
Competitive intensity in the gold finance sector
Gold price movements
Customer acquisition growth
Interest rate environment
While Muthoot Finance continues to lead the gold loan market, analysts believe earnings growth could remain moderate unless margin pressures ease.
