In a major blow to its Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha on Thursday, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) removed him from the post of Deputy Leader of the party in the Upper House. Furthermore, the party requested that no time be allotted to him to speak in the House.
“After all, what is the problem with me speaking?”
Raghav Chadha stated, “Whenever I get an opportunity to speak in the Rajya Sabha, I have consistently raised issues concerning the common man. Am I doing something wrong? Why would anyone want to silence me? After all, what harm has the Aam Aadmi Party suffered by my raising these issues? Why, ultimately, would anyone wish to stop me from speaking?” He thanked the common people for standing by him, adding, “I belong to you, and I am here for you.” Addressing those who sought to silence him, he delivered a message: “Do not mistake my silence for defeat; I am a river that, when the time is right, transforms into a surging flood.”
What is the Issue?
The Aam Aadmi Party has now appointed Ashok Mittal as the Deputy Leader in the Rajya Sabha, replacing MP Raghav Chadha. The party has formally informed the Rajya Sabha Secretariat that Chadha should not be allotted any time to speak in Parliament.
Shortly thereafter, Raghav Chadha shared a video on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter). The video featured clips of his interventions in the Upper House, accompanied by the caption, “Buri Nazar” (The Evil Eye).
Political Tensions Escalate
The Delhi BJP has reacted sharply to the issue of Aam Aadmi Party Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha being removed from the post of Deputy Leader. State BJP President Virendra Sachdeva termed this decision a sign of the party’s internal crisis and weak leadership. Taking aim at Arvind Kejriwal, Sachdeva asserted that he is a weak leader who possesses neither the courage to confront the opposition nor the capability to handle the growing dissent within his own party.
Sachdeva remarked that while every political party has the right to select the leader of its parliamentary group, the manner in which Raghav Chadha was treated—not only being removed from the post of Deputy Leader in the Rajya Sabha but also being made the subject of a request to deny him speaking time in the House—is both unusual and deeply concerning. This move indicates that Chadha has distanced himself from Arvind Kejriwal’s leadership. He stated that prominent leaders—first Swati Maliwal and now Raghav Chadha—have distanced themselves from Kejriwal, which is a serious sign for the party.
