ICC changed the rules of WTC, know why New Zealand does not get entry in the final if the new rules were implemented from the beginning

The World Test Championship title match will be played between India and New Zealand in Southampton from June 18 to 22. This is the final of the Test Championship cycle, which ran till 2019-2021. Indian team reached the finals with 72.2 and New Zealand team with 70.0% points. The ICC has made a major change in the points system for the 2021-23 cycle. The rule of a percentage point will continue as before but now equal points will be given for every test match.

In 2019-21, there was an equal 120 points for every series included in the Test Championship. Whether the series was of 2 matches or 5 matches, the points were only 120. In such a case, 1 test match was also of 60 points and also of 24 points. Now that won't happen. Let us know how the new point system will be implemented. We will also know why New Zealand could not make it to the final if this system was implemented in the 2019-21 cycle as well.

First, let's understand the points system of 2019-21

When the first cycle of the Test Championship started in 2019, the ICC had said that there would be 120 points for a series of two or more matches. 60 points for each match in a two-Test series. There will be 40 points for each match in the three-match series. Similarly, 30 points for each match in a 4-Test series and 24 points for each Test for a five-Test series.

That is, if the Indian team won a series of four Test matches 3-1, then India would have 120 points. Similarly, if a 3-Test series is won 2-0, you will get 100 points (80 points for two wins and 20 points for one draw). In this way, India's total points would be prepared by adding up the points of all the series, and based on this the team's place in the championship table would be decided. The positioning of all the other teams would have been prepared in the same way and the top 2 teams would reach the finals.

rules changed due to corona

The ICC changed the point system in November 2020 due to the Corona epidemic. Due to the cancellation of many series, the required 6 series of some teams were not being completed. For this reason, instead of calculating the points directly, the ICC implemented the rule of percentage point system. That is, the table is made based on what percentage points a team gets out of the total available points.

Before the rule was changed, Team India had 360 points from four series and was at the first position in the table. India defeated West Indies 2-0 in the 2-match series, Bangladesh 2-0 in the 2-match series, and South Africa 3-0 in the 3-match series. India got the full 120-120 points of these three series. At the same time, due to the 0-2 loss against New Zealand, Team India did not get any points. India got 75 points when the percentage point system was implemented. India secured 360 points out of the total available 480 points. So the percentage point is 75.

Australia's team was in second place at that time with 300 points from three series. He scored these 300 marks out of 360 possible marks. So his percentage point became 83.33 and he overtook India. After this, the Australian team lost to Team India in the Test series. The Indian team later defeated England 3–1. In this way, India had 72.2% points and Australia slipped to third place with 69.2 points.

New Zealand ahead of Australia like this

New Zealand defeated India, Pakistan, and West Indies by an equal margin of 2-0 in the 2-2 match series in the 2019-21 cycle. Their series against Sri Lanka ended in a 1–1 draw and New Zealand lost 0–3 against Australia. In this way, New Zealand collected 420 points from a total of 600 points in the five series. In this way, his percentage point became 70 and he went ahead of Australia. Team India qualified for the final by finishing first in the table and New Zealand second.

What's different in the New Testament

The rule of percentage points remains in place, but the number of points teams will get from matches has been changed. Now every Test match will have the same number of points, no matter how many matches are played in the series. To understand what difference it can make, let us apply the new rule in the previous cycle.

New Zealand would have left 63.63 percentage points

The New Zealand team played 11 matches in the last cycle. In this, he won 7 and lost in 4. Assuming all matches have the same 20 points, New Zealand would have scored 140 out of 220 points. That is, his percentage point remains 63.33. How many points would Australia have by this rule? Australia had won 8 out of 14 Tests, lost 4, and had drawn two matches. Australia would have scored 180 out of 280 points had each match been 20 points. 160 points for 8 wins and 20 points for two draws (10 points per draw). In this situation, Australia's percentage point would have been 64.28.

Team India still number-1

The Indian team played 17 matches in the last cycle. In this he won 12. 1 match ended in a draw. Lost in four. That is, if India had 20 points per match, they would have scored 250 points out of a total of 340 points. India's percentage point would have been 73.52. The Indian team would have remained at number-1 in this situation as well.
