IMEI Registration Rule: Very soon in India, there is going to be a change regarding the IMEI number of smartphones. The government has announced that from January 1, 2023, it will be necessary to register the IMEI of all mobile phones before the sale in India. This registration will be done on the country's anti-counterfeiting and lost handset blocking portal. Once the rules are fully implemented, it will be necessary to obtain the IMEI certificate from the Indian Counterfeited Device Restriction Portal run by the Department of Telecommunications.

Each smartphone comes with a unique 15-digit IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number. The IMEI acts as the unique ID of the device. It is difficult to track a lost mobile phone due to the presence of fake devices with the same IMEI on the telecom network. Because of this, the government has announced this new rule. Let's get to know more about it.

Smartphone's IMEI registration will be necessary

The government has told through a notification that it will be mandatory to register locally made or imported mobile phones in the country before the sale. As such, it will be necessary to obtain the IMEI certificate from the Indian Counterfeited Device Restriction Portal operated by the Department of Telecommunications, the government said in the notification. Every phone manufactured in India must register an International Mobile Equipment Identification Number.

Other information

The government has issued this rule under the Prevention of Tampering (Prevention of Tampering) of the Mobile Device Equipment Identification Number (Amendment) Rules, 2022. Along with this, the Indian government has introduced the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) project to block and track lost or stolen phones. The CEIR project is also addressing the issue of counterfeit products to address the issue of lost mobile phones. Under the new rule, it will be mandatory to register the IMEI number of the imported devices on the ICDR system. Same, it will be mandatory to obtain an IMEI certificate for the import of mobile devices through custom ports.
