The 17th match of the World Cup 2023 will be played between India and Bangladesh today at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. While the Bangladesh team will try to make a comeback through this match, the Indian team will try to win the World Cup. Both the teams have come face to face four times in the ODI World Cup. Out of these, India has won three matches and Bangladesh has won only one match.
The fifth match between the two in the World Cup
Both the teams came face to face for the first time in the World Cup in 2007 in Port of Spain. That match was recorded in the pages of history. Bangladesh created a big upset by defeating Rahul Dravid's Indian team by five wickets in the group stage. After this, Team India was out of the World Cup itself. In the 2011 World Cup, the two faced each other again in the group stage in Mirpur. This time, under the leadership of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Team India defeated Bangladesh by 87 runs.
Virender Sehwag and Virat Kohli had scored centuries in this match. After this, under the leadership of Dhoni, India defeated Bangladesh by 109 runs in the quarter-final match held in Melbourne in 2015. In 2019, under the leadership of Virat Kohli, the Indian team defeated Bangladesh by 28 runs in Birmingham. Now this will be the fifth match between the two in the 2023 World Cup.
First ODI between the two teams in India since 1998
The most interesting thing is that this will be only the fourth ODI match between the two on Indian soil. Both the teams have met only three times in ODIs in India. The last time both of them faced each other on Indian soil was 25 years ago i.e. in 1998. India has defeated Bangladesh in all three ODIs at home. In 1990, India defeated Bangladesh by nine wickets in Chandigarh.
After this, in 1998, Bangladesh was defeated by five wickets in Mohali. In 1998, India had defeated Bangladesh by five wickets at Wankhede. After 25 years, when the Bangladesh team comes to play on Indian soil, they will have this record in their mind. However, the clash is going to be interesting. Apart from these three matches, India has played 25 matches in Bangladesh and 12 matches at any neutral venue.
Overall ODI record of both teams
Overall 40 ODIs have been played between the two teams. Out of these, India has won 31 and Bangladesh has won eight ODIs. One match remained inconclusive. The last encounter between the two was played during the Asia Cup 2023 in Colombo, which Bangladesh won by six runs. This will be the fifth ODI match between the two teams after the 2019 World Cup.
In the last four matches, Bangladesh has won three and India has won only one match. However, among these four, senior players like Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli were given rest. Three of these matches were played during the ODI series in 2022, with Shikhar Dhawan as the captain, while one match was played during the Asia Cup 2023.
Bangladesh puts pressure on India
No matter how Bangladesh's performance is against other teams, this team is in a different color in front of India. An example of this is Bangladesh winning three of the four ODI matches played between the two countries in the last 10 months. Indian team's bowling coach Paras Mhambrey has made it clear that the team will not make any changes in its winning combination, that is, India will go with the winning team against Pakistan here too.
Afghanistan and Netherlands have proved that no big team is safe by winning against England and South Africa in this World Cup. Then India must remember that it was Bangladesh who eliminated it in the preliminary round of the 2007 World Cup. Bangladesh defeated India 2-1 in the bilateral series held in December last year and defeated the Indian team by six runs in the Super-4 of the Asia Cup.
Rohit eyes third consecutive century against Bangladesh
The form the Indian team is in under the leadership of Rohit Sharma is not a good sign for Bangladesh. Rohit Sharma himself will be eyeing to score his third consecutive century in the World Cup against Bangladesh. He has played innings of 137 runs in the 2015 World Cup quarter-finals and 104 runs against this country in Birmingham in 2019. Here too he is seen in unmatched form. After being out for 0 against Australia, he played amazing innings of 131 against Afghanistan and 86 against Pakistan. If his bat works here also, Bangladesh will be in trouble.
Told Shami, and Ashwin about the selection: Mhambre
After achieving three consecutive wins, there is no flaw visible in the Indian team. This statement of Paras Mhambrey tells how difficult it has become to make a place for the likes of R Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, and Surya Kumar Yadav in the team. Mhambre says that it is very difficult that players like these are not getting a place in the playing eleven, but all three have been talked to about this and they have no problem with it. The team management is in no mood to tamper with the winning combination. It is clear from Mhambre's statement that the management is not going to make any mistake of taking Bangladesh lightly.
