After almost 22 months, PML-N leader Shehbaz Sharif has once again taken oath as the Prime Minister of Pakistan. This alliance of Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) and Pakistan People's Party (PPP) was in power from April 2022 to August 2023 and during this period relations with India were not special. This situation is likely to continue in the future.
Experts say that India will decide further after looking at the political stability of Pakistan, the attitude of the Shahbaz government towards terrorism, and the status of its strategic relations with China. Some people also believe that in recent months Pakistan has once again come closer to America. This situation can also affect the relations between India and Pakistan.
The Foreign Ministry did not issue any response
The Indian Foreign Ministry has not issued any reaction regarding the new government of Pakistan till the time of writing late evening. No message has been issued by PM Narendra Modi, who immediately congratulated him on the internet media on the formation of the new government in the neighboring country.
PM Modi congratulated Sharif
When Shehbaz Sharif became Prime Minister for the first time in April 2022, PM Modi congratulated him on the internet media site X (then Twitter). Then Modi said that India wants peace and terrorism-free stability in this entire region so that we can focus on the challenges of development and ensure the well-being of the people.
Shahbaz raised the issue of Kashmir on Sunday
After being elected to the post of PM, Shahbaz raised the issue of Kashmir on Sunday and talked about passing a resolution on the independence of Kashmir and Palestine in the Parliament of Pakistan. Indian Foreign Ministry officials say that India's relations with Pakistan have been tense for the last nine years. But this has neither affected India's credibility in global diplomacy nor its economic progress.
Difficult for India to move forward on bilateral relations
In such a situation, there is no pressure for India to improve relations with Pakistan. Without a change in Pakistan's attitude on the issue of Kashmir and terrorism, it is difficult for India to move forward in bilateral relations. Apart from this, in the current context, the priorities of the governments on both sides will be different.
The challenge to overcome the country's economic crisis
While the priority for the new government of Pakistan will be to overcome the economic crisis of the country and take the help of 3.5 billion dollars from the International Monetary Fund, India will be busy in the general elections till May 2024. Barring the first one and a half years of the Modi government's tenure, India's relations with Pakistan have remained tense.
Efforts to improve relations with the Nawaz government
PM Modi had initially tried to improve relations with Nawaz Sharif's government. He had also traveled to Pakistan to attend a wedding in the family of PM Nawaz Sharif without a formal invitation. The then External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj also visited Islamabad and meetings between the National Security Advisors of both the countries were also held. But after the attack by pro-Pak terrorists in Pathankot on December 31, 2015, the attitude of the Modi government completely changed.
India attacks terrorist bases in Pakistan
Later, India attacked terrorist bases located in Pakistan twice. Due to this, the relations got spoiled a lot. After India's decision to abolish Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan reacted sharply and limited diplomatic relations with India. This situation still exists.
