This is the reason why for the first time in the country's power sector, there was a record maximum power demand of 250 GW on 30 May 2024 and India has successfully met it.
Let us tell you that a day before this, on May 29, the electricity demand had reached a high of 234.3 GW. This reflects the combined effect of increased load due to the summer season and increasing industrial and residential power consumption. The special thing is that despite such a huge demand, it did not cause any problem in the transmission network of the country and no report of power cut was also registered.
Preparation for a maximum demand of 258 GW
The support received from renewable energy sources, especially solar energy during solar hours and wind energy during non-solar hours, was also very important in meeting this demand. The organizations that oversee and direct electricity are now preparing for the maximum demand of 258 gigawatts in the coming months.
Grids collapsed due to heavy demand for electricity in 2012
It is known that on 30-31 July 2012, there was a similar heavy demand for electricity, due to which India had to face the world's biggest power cut. At that time, the northern and eastern grids collapsed due to overload. The result was that 620 million people in the country were immersed in darkness for more than 13 hours.
India's transmission network strengthened
The measures taken from 2012 till now have turned India's transmission network into the world's largest integrated grid. Due to the strong transmission network, operator Grid-India can maintain balance by shifting thermal, nuclear, hydro, solar, and wind power from one corner to another and load here and there for power distribution in the country.
