Joe Biden faces Impeachment Inquiry: The US President is in deep trouble after returning from the G20 summit in New Delhi. Republican lawmakers on Tuesday began an impeachment inquiry against Joe Biden.
Republican House members have accused Democrat Biden of 'lying' to the American people about his son Hunter's controversial business deals abroad. Let us tell you that the US Presidential elections are to be held next year in 2024 and even before that, Joe Biden has been in trouble. What and how will the process happen? Let us find out.
What will be the process?
The US Constitution provides that Congress can impeach the President in case of 'treason, bribery or other high crimes and misdemeanors'. It will be investigated by a parliamentary committee. The process of impeachment is conducted in two stages. First, the lower House of Representatives votes on the statement of charges against the President and impeachment by a simple majority. After this, the Senate prosecutes the President. After the debate, 100 senators voted on each article. A two-thirds majority is required to convict, failing which the President is acquitted.
For information, let us tell you that no President has ever been removed from office by impeachment. When Donald Trump was in office as US President, the House approved the impeachment article against him in 2019 and again in 2021. However, both times the Senate acquitted Trump. Currently, the US Senate is controlled by the Democrats, due to which it is considered impossible to conduct an impeachment inquiry against Biden.
Why was such action taken even before the US elections?
Since the 2020 presidential election, the Trump wing of the Republican Party has insisted on an impeachment inquiry against Biden.
After gaining a majority in the House this year, Republican lawmakers claimed they had 'serious and credible allegations' against Biden. Speaker Kevin McCarthy gave this information.
At the same time, Democrats say that any impeachment inquiry before the 2024 presidential election will make it easier for Trump to bring the House of Representatives into his camp.
Trump's legal action will distract the Senate committee from the impeachment inquiry, which faces 91 criminal charges.
Biden's image of honesty may be tarnished due to his son's affairs.
