Badrinath Highway in Joshimath of Chamoli district affected by the disaster is also sinking in many places due to landslides. In the last few days, the emergence of cracks on the highway has increased. This is the condition when only a few vehicles are passing through this route.
In the yatra season, more than five thousand small and big vehicles pass through this route every day for Badrinath, Hemkund Sahib, and Valley of Flowers along with the border area. Then how will the highway be able to withstand the pressure of traffic?
It is clear that the highway needs permanent treatment, but the Road Safety Organization (BRO) is trying to keep the traffic smooth by filling the cracks with soil and debris.
strategically important
The Badrinath Highway is as important from a religious and mythological point of view as it is from a strategic point of view. Starting from Rishikesh, the highway passes through Joshimath city and reaches the Mana Valley bordering China. About 12 km of this highway falls in Joshimath.
The danger on this part of the highway is also increasing due to landslides. The highway is affected by landslides at more than 20 places in the city. New cracks are continuously appearing on the route and the width of old cracks is increasing. BRO is filling them by adding soil and debris. The maximum landslide is in the Marwari region, where the road has sunk in more than ten places.
new cracks appeared in four places
On Saturday, new cracks appeared at four places within a radius of about 500 meters between JP Colony and the BRO office. Here, the width of the pothole on the road near Marwari Tirahe is also increasing.
This is bound to increase the concern of the government machinery and army officers along with the residents. The reason is that this is the only route from Chamoli leading to Badrinath Dham, Sri Hemkund Sahib, and the World Heritage Valley of Flowers.
The doors of Badrinath Dham are to open in April, while the pilgrimage to Hemkund Sahib will begin in May and the Valley of Flowers will open in June. All the activities of the Army and ITBP for the Mana Valley bordering China are also conducted from here.
Landslide areas on the highway have been observed. Asphaltization is being done after treating it by filling debris at landslide places along with making drains on the roadside for drainage of water coming on the highway. BRO's priority is to keep the traffic smooth during the Yatra.
