Kejriwal government in action mode on road accidents: CM's meeting with concerned agencies, officers told why accidents are happening in Delhi

The Delhi government is in action mode to reduce road accidents in Delhi to zero. CM Arvind Kejriwal held a high-level meeting on various aspects being taken to reduce accidents. Transport Minister Kailash Gehlot, Chief Secretary, Transport Commissioner, IIT experts, Special Commissioner of Police, and many senior officials were present at this.

 

During the meeting, it was agreed to strictly follow the rules related to road safety. Bus-lane enforcement, analysis of the effect of the angel scheme, development of safety zones on 100 schools, and the decision to follow the lane rules.

Kejriwal directed to put 50 percent of the compounding fee for traffic offenses in the road safety fund. Now regular review meetings will be held to keep an eye on the ongoing projects related to road safety.

 

Delhi's road network is 10% as compared to other states

During the review meeting, officials told the CM through a presentation that 47% of the accidents happen on national and state roads, whereas this road network is only 10% on city roads. According to the statistics, speeding is the main reason behind accidents. Drivers drive vehicles at high speed on wide roads. Such accidents are more common in schools, metro stations, and commercial areas. Here pedestrians cross more than the roads.

98,294 vehicles were included in the speed study. Under this, the average speed of vehicles is 44 kmph, while 21% of vehicles are running at a speed exceeding the prescribed speed limit. Every second bike is overspeeding, and 50% of light trucks, cars, autos, and trucks are overspeeding. Most cars travel at 40-50 kmph in the city and 8.5% of cars, and 10.2% of light pickup trucks exceed 80 kmph.
