The committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has finalized the names of the new Lokpal chief and a vigilance commissioner. According to media reports, the committee has selected former Supreme Court judge Justice AM Khanwilkar as the Lokpal chief, while the name of Bank of Maharashtra Management Director (MD) AS Rajeev has been approved for the post of Vigilance Commissioner. However, this has not been officially confirmed yet.
At present, Justice Pradeep Kumar Mohanty is the acting Chairman of the Lokpal. On the other hand, one of the two posts of Vigilance Commissioner is vacant. Let us tell you that AS Rajeev is currently serving as the Managing Director of the Bank of Maharashtra. Whereas, Justice Khanwilkar retired from the Supreme Court in July 2020.
Lokpal consists of eight members
The Lokpal has a Chairman and may have eight members, four of whom are judicial and the rest non-judicial. An order issued by the Personnel Ministry said that the Prime Minister-led selection committee has constituted a search committee to recommend the panel to consider for the post of Chairperson and Members of Lokpal.
Lokpal came in 2013
It is noteworthy that the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act which envisages the appointment of Lokpal at the Center and Lokayuktas in the states to look into corruption cases against certain categories of public servants, was passed in 2013. The Lokpal chief and his members are appointed by the President. The selection committee headed by the Prime Minister recommends the names. The committee consists of the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, the leader of the opposition in the lower house, the Chief Justice of India, or a judge.
