Violence continues in Manipur, but in the meantime, good news has come to the fore. National Highway-2 has been opened amid unrest in Manipur. Here, in the latest violence, three people have died in Bishnupur district.
Three were killed in firing in Bishnupur
At least three people were killed in fresh violence at Khoijumantabi village in Manipur's Bishnupur district. All three were 'village volunteers' and were monitoring the area in a makeshift bunker. Meanwhile, he was killed in a shootout with some unidentified gunmen.
Police said that five other people were injured in Saturday's firing, and have been admitted to a hospital in Imphal. Intermittent violence is being reported from Manipur.
National Highway opened after two months
Meanwhile, the United People's Front (UPF) and the Kuki National Organization (KNO) have opened National Highway-2 in Kangpokpi district. Both these organizations belong to the Kuki community, which had kept the highway closed, but the highway was opened after an appeal by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
UPF and KNO said on Sunday that a decision has been taken to open the National Highway in Kangpokpi. He informed that this step has been taken with immediate effect to ensure uninterrupted supply of essential commodities in Manipur.
What is the whole matter?
Violence has been raging between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur for almost two months. Because of this more than 100 people have died.
Clashes broke out for the first time on May 3 after a 'tribal solidarity march' was organized in the hill districts to protest against the demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status by the Meitei community, and another incident of firing was reported in the past.
